Article
A research article is the amalgamation of thoughts and ideas of many authors that are put together and published. Authorship credit is then based on each authors substantial contributions. An editorial in the Health Renaissance suggests that Authorship should be earned rather than offered.
Guidance about authorship should be based on the contributions of each author. Each author should have participated sufficiently in the work to take responsibility for the content. Authorship credit should be based on substantial contributions in the form of:
a. Conception, design, analysis & interpretations of data
b. Drafting of the article or revising it critically for intellectual content
c. Final approval of version to be published
There are certain guidelines for authorship in health research which one can from the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) at the time of publishing an article.
General supervision is not sufficient for authorship. Health research and papers have a large number of authors due to the multidisciplinary nature of work. However, each author must have made substantial intellectual contributions to the study so as to earn authorship.
Sometimes there is a long list of authors for a relatively small scientific paper submitted for publication. Most often this occurs due to ignorance of potential authors’ need to qualify for authorship.
