Abstract

Often in our practice, we have felt the need to further advance the mandible while treating ClassII patients with fixed functional appliances. The original proposed method of refabricating the appliance or adding guerien locks to the appliance is time consuming as well as cumbersome. An easy and customized method is proposed to save your time and convenience.

INTRODUCTION

Every practitioner in his practice often faces with the challenges of treating Class II patients with increased overjet in the growing phase. In today's scenario, with the introduction of fixed functional appliances, the paradigm is shifting away from the removable functional appliances. One of the most commonly used fixed functional appliance is the MODIFIED PROTRACTION APPLIANCE-4(MPA4)1 . MPA-4 advantages include ease of manufacture, low cost, and rapid fitting. Another advantage it offers is that it can be made up at any time. This is helpful when there has been a failure in the supply of other commercially available appliances or if the orthodontist practices in an area where it is difficult to quickly obtain certain other alternatives. However once installed, if the clinician wants further activation or overcorrection, a new appliance has to be fabricated or commercially available Guerin locks are installed which can prove expensive. A new method is proposed which is easy and can be done on chairside.

METHOD

Beads made of composite are placed in between the mandibular anterior tooth and the tube of the MPA4. [Fig 1]

RESULT

The MPA-4 is easily activated on the chair-side with adding composite beads and light curing. With this method, the use of expensive Guerin locks is avoided and also the need of the fabrication of new appliance is avoided. This saves the chair-time as well as is helpful for the needy and economically deprived patients.

CONCLUSION

Addition of composite beads is economically as well as time saving method as compared to the other conventional proposed methods.
