“Every tooth in a man’s head is more valuable than a diamond.” - Miguel de Cervantes

After the COVID-19 pandemic, online communication between the doctors and patients has gained popularity, offering numerous benefits for both patients and dentists. This is known as ‘Teledentistry’, an online platform that provides dental services to patients without requiring them to be at the same location as the dentist. It facilitates exchange of information for consultation and treatment planning over long distances.

It is advantageous particularly for patients from rural areas, where many facilities are not readily available. As dental treatment has evolved to be highly specialized and technique sensitive, the advancement of teledentistry benefits our national healthcare system by enhancing the availability of oral health care at different health care centres, both rural and urban.

Furthermore, teledentistry can be used to remotely train dental professionals in specialized clinical skills at beneficiary locations. It also decreases cost, maximizes time and provides convenient care for patients and doctors. Dentists should follow principles and procedures about informed consent, patient details, personal communications, and should maintain privacy and confidentiality. With all these advances taking place, dentists can connect to virtual dental health clinics, ushering in a new era of dentistry.
